How to Remove “Powered by Shopify” from Your Store

Every Shopify store comes with the a default URL of your store That might be okay when you’re starting out, but once your customer base begins to grow, you’ll want the more professional look of a custom domain name. It’s easier for your customers to remember, boosts your SEO, and helps to build your brand identity.

Luckily, Shopify makes it really easy to get a shopify domain name directly through their platform. If you already own a domain name and want to transfer it to Shopify, you can do that too.

Buying a Domain Name through Shopify

Log into your Shopify admin.

Click on ‘Online Store’ in the left menu, and then select ‘Domains.’

On the right, click on the ‘Buy new domain’ button.

Use the form field to search for a relevant, available domain name. The results will appear in a list below the form field.

When you find an option and extension you’re happy with, click on the ‘Buy’ button next to your preferred URL.

Enter your credit card details if prompted and click ‘Continue.’

Review the Summary page and ensure all the information is correct. By default the store owner’s information will be applied.

There’s a check box to choose whether you want to auto-renew your domain registration every year. By default, it is checked for yes. Uncheck the box if you prefer to handle this manually.

If WHOIS Privacy is important to you, make sure it’s listed as available here. It keeps your personal information private. If you’ve chosen an extension that does not support WHOIS, you can click ‘Cancel’ and choose another option.

When everything on the Summary page looks good click ‘Buy Domain,’ but keep in mind that domain purchases are non-refundable.

You’ll now be redirected to the domain settings page, and you’ll receive confirmation emails for your purchase.

You’ll receive a verification email, and you’ll have to click the ‘Verify’ button in order to complete your purchase. It may take several hours for your domain name to update in your settings.

Once everything is setup, click ‘Online Store’ and then ‘Domains.’

In the primary domain box, click ‘Change primary domain.’

In the pop-up, you’ll the list of available domain name associated with your account. Choose your new URL from this list then click ‘Save.’

Transfer a Domain Name to Shopify

Make sure you’re eligible:

  • Domains must be more than 60 days old to be eligible to transfer.
  • Some extensions will not be eligible to transfer (including the .ca extension).
  • You must have access to original domain provider account and its associated email.
  • Be prepared to pay to register for an addition 12 months when you transfer.
  • Not all domain providers allow transfers, so familiarize yourself with your provider’s policies first.

These steps will vary depending on your domain provider, but generally:

  • Log into your account with your domain provider.
  • Make sure the associated email is correct and that you have access to it.
  • Unlock the domain name you want to transfer, there may be a confirmation email to complete this step.
  • Find the transfer domain option. You’ll receive a transfer authorization code.
  • Log into your Shopify admin.
  • Click ‘Online Store’ in left menu, then ‘Domains.’
  • Click ‘Connect existing domain’ on the right.
  • Now click ‘Transfer your domain.’
  • Enter the domain address in the form field, but don’t include www.
  • Click ‘Next.’
  • Click ‘Verify domain.’
  • If ‘DOMAIN UNLOCKED’ appears, click ‘Next.’ If you received a message that your domain is locked you’ll have to return to your domain provider and unlock it.
  • In ‘Verification code’ form field, enter the code given to you by your original domain provider in Step 2.
  • Click ‘Next’
  • Click ‘Buy and transfer.’
  • Double check all of the information is correct, then click the button to confirm or approve the transfer.

This process can take up to 20 days to complete, so you’ll received an email from Shopify once the transfer has gone through.
